In the beautiful city of Barcelona you´ll find a large amount of bars, terraces and restaurants where you can enjoy a nice coffee. Despite that this city can be expensive, the price depends on the district or place that you´re in.
The most touristy area and the one with the most influence is definitely the Ramblas. Located in the city centre, they are the famous pedestrian street where thousands of people walk up and down all day, from Plaça Catalunya to the port, immersing themselves in the Gothic quarter, going up the monument of the discoverer of America, Christopher Columbus. To either side of the Ramblas, you´ll find anything and everything, and many places to have a coffee. However, this is quite expensive due to its location. A good example of this is Starbucks, an American coffee-shop chain that charges 5€ for a coffee. However, it´s a great coffee with a view of the Ramblas.
Starting again from the main square in the city, Plaça Catalunya, we go up the hill towards Passeig de Gràcia, another unique but expensive street located in the Eixample district. Here we can find the best shops, two buildings by Gaudí (La Pedrera and Casa Batlló), the Antoni Tàpies Foundation and the best restaurants and cafés with pleasant terraces.
These two streets are all aimed towards tourism, so don´t expect low prices.
In the centre you can enjoy a nice coffee at a reasonable price at Iposa. It´s a bar-restaurant in Raval, a few yards away from the back entrance of the Boquería Market, on 14 Carrer de les Floristes de la Rambla. It has a terrace and a children´s park next to it, ideal for the whole family. Going down the same street you´ll find a bar called Mendizabal, whose terrace is on the corner of Carrer Hospital.
On 12 Plaça Universitat, very close to Plaça Catalunya and the Gran Vía, you´ll find Bar Estudiantil, where you can watch live football and enjoy DJ sessions every Friday and Saturday.
Close to the cathedral or the Palau de la Música you can find the bar-restaurant El Reloj, located on 40 Via Laietana. It´s very central and offers great quality at affordable prices.
However, if you want to have the most expensive and rarest coffee in the world, you can find it in Barcelona. It comes from Indonesia and it´s called Kopi Luwak. The grains of this coffee are made organically in the digestive system of a marsupial called luwak, who lives in Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi. The mature fruits of the coffee are part of what luwaks eat, as well as other fruits. The internal coffee grain isn´t digested but the enzymes of the luwak´s stomach add flavour to the coffee. The internal grains are excreted and then collected to be cleaned and lightly toasted, so it doesn´t affect the resulting flavour developed during the process. The annual production of this coffee is only 250kg and it´s sold mainly in Japan, with some of it going to the USA.
Its aroma is rich and strong, an intense body with touches of caramel and chocolate, medium acidity and sweet, with no bitterness and a long and fresh after taste. Try this unique experience at Doctor Coffee, located in the Sarrià district, on 59 Passeig de Sant Joan Bosco.
