No traveller who is in Budapest can miss out on a visit to the small spots of Ecseri Piac (essentially, a flea market). Ecseri Piac isn´t just a market where you can find local crafts and second hand objects which are more or less delirious (like, for example, Camden Town in London), or a place where you can buy old furniture at a good price, such as the Rastro in Madrid. No. Ecseri Piac, in the eyes of the Westerners, it´s a ´surreal´ place where they sell the remains of the old communist junk. The stands are put up under frail zinc roofs and the market is surrounded by such high wiring (see the photo) that the voyager may be scared. But, careful, this isn´t a theme park or a place built especially for the tourists. Ecseri Piac may be the last authentic location of what the fall of the Berlin Wall meant and the collapse of communism.
The experimented traveller in search of real Hungary, just as they arrive to their apartments in Budapest and unpack their luggage, has to go and have a look around this market. An unmissable visit.
