Gran Vía

The Gran Vía is one of the most famous streets in Madrid. It starts in the Plaza de Alcalá and it runs through the city up to the Plaza de España. Throughout this long street we can find shops, hotels, banks, restaurants, bars, cinemas and theatres, turning it into the most important commercial part of the city.

This avenue, which was born in the 19th century, was created due to the necessity of communicating the northwest part of the city with the historical centre and many proposals were presented but the definitive one was approved in 1901 and its construction began in 1910. The project was divided in three different sections and it was finally finished in 1929.

The street had different names throughout the years but the one that it possesses presently was determined after democracy came back to Spain in 1981 by Enrique Tierno Galván.

There are many important buildings that draw the attention of millions of tourists every year. Some of them are the Edificio Metrópolis or the Telefónica building.

Without doubt, walking down the Gran Vía, whether it is to go shopping or simply to get to know the avenue, it´s one of the things that all tourists should do before leaving the Spanish capital. You can get Madrid accommodation and get to know the Gran Vía.
