The MOMA in New York

The Museum of Modern Art of New York, also known as MOMA, is probably the museum which has set the pace for many years regarding the organization of an art museum in the 20th century. The origins of the museum date from the 1920s and they articulate, of course, from personal collections, investments, the Rockafeller surname somewhere in there, and a very long etcetera. Among them, fundamental exhibitions like one of Van Gogh and Picasso which would catapult them both to what they are now: icons of modern art, above their real talent and great work, the MOMA turned them into posters, postcards, paintings for the bathroom, towels, soaps, etc.

What´s true is that for many years, even until today, the importance of MOMA hasn´t dissolved and that´s because of the invaluable quality of its collection, with very important works of suprematism, cubism, surrealism and dadaism among others, as well as key works of impressionism and expressionism from the end of the 20th century. We also consider that in a visit to the MOMA you can find designs by Bauhaus, architectural models, an unbelievable library and a cute café at the top.

But how much of all of this actually intervenes in today´s contemporary art? The MOMA institution keeps on redefining itself and putting on the table the best of its collection. Of course there´s also the PS-1, a space which also belongs to MOMA, but dedicated to contemporary art from the 1950s until today.

It seems that, in Europe, the economic recession has brought unemployment, hunger, racism, classism and violence all around it, as well as a great effort by the younger ones in highlighting the problems that conglomerates of banks and their false business affairs have brought to countries like Greece, Portugal and Spain. In the same way, in the last few years there´s been an emergency of museums which is pretty considerable across the whole of Europe. Should it be mentioned that MOMA opened its doors just a few days before the collapse of Wall Street in 1929? A coincidence?

Maybe, museums are the best places where you can invest and protect a property under the denomination of ´culture´ and ´art´. What better option to protect and art piece and, above all, turn it profitable with thousands of loans, exhibitions and the following merchandising just with the possession rights to this work. It´s not a coincidence that it´s believed that in the investment for the development of new museums, galleries and cultural centres, both official and non-official, that the desire to save remains, but to save paintings, sculptures, videos or exhibitions. Vile metal always makes art muddy. Or maybe vile metal was always art. Nothing more, nothing less. And please, let´s not think about the tourist factor, the Guggenheim and Bilbao, because that´s another story. For more information on the MOMA visit this webpage: http://www.moma.org/
