Viewpoints in Barcelona

Have you ever dreamed of being Icarus and seeing a city like Barcelona from the air? It´s a great dream, but reality is somewhat different. However, we can see the cities from high points and we will tell you the secret of how to do it if you´re in Barcelona and have no wings to fly. Heights have a fatal attraction when you travel to a city and that´s due to the desire that we all have of seeing at a single glance everything that surrounds us, even more so if we´re going for a limited time to a place and we want to take back as much visual memories as possible. Barcelona has beautiful places to see panoramically from the air. One of them is the Mirador de Colom, which is a tower with a viewpoint that has in its upper part the statue of Cristopher Columbus pointing towards the Mediterranean. It´s located on the bottom of the Ramblas and it was built by the Council in 1881 to pay tribute to the discoverer of America who arrived by in Europe to the port of Barcelona. From there you can see all of the city´s splendor in the four areas of the city. North we have the Gothic district, the bell towers of La Mercè and Santa María del Mar, the Ramblas and even the beautiful Eixample district. Looking south we can see Montjuïc, to the west we have the Natural Park of Collserola and to the east, following the coast, the Forum. The Torre Agbar is one of the three skyscrapers that Barcelona has and it distinguishes...

Erotic furniture in Barcelona

We live in a time where eroticism in culture moves at the speed of the internet, unfortunately. With computers we can find plenty of information on erotic and sexual subjects: how to satisfy your partner, offers on pleasure items, such as vibrators or even panties you can eat as well as plenty of pornography, webcams, international escorts for all genders and couples, how to improve your orgasm, etc. It´s all on the web at your total disposal and within reach of your credit card. Even more so, pleasure is within reach 24h a day with all the new apps for mobile phones. But is that true eroticism? What the net makes us forget is that eroticism is a couple or solo experience, that otherwise, despite being a mechanical act, a source of money spending, social shame (yes, it still exists) and clandestine consumption, should be a celebration of senses, the acknowledgement of our bodies as spaces for infinite pleasure. This way, eroticism should be an encounter with ourselves to recharge energies, put our feet firmly on the ground and see ourselves as human, here and now. Being sensual is being in the present, always. For those who still believe in the sensuality of the couple in the bedroom, for those who are still romantics of the best sex, the Margarita Bonita shop in Barcelona offers some of the most interesting furniture for the bedroom. With avant-garde designs and personal care, the products of Margarita Bonita are as good as the best and most exquisite tastes, and guarantee new and prolonged movements of sexual pleasure. For example, Margarita Bonita offers the...

Calçots season in Barcelona

The calçotada season in Barcelona is as highly awaited as spring, because they both come together. The calçot was born in the rural areas to regain all the strengths that were lost in winter. You´ll be asking yourself what a calçot has that onions and leaks don´t have, since they´re so similar, and the truth is that its soft and sweet taste distinguishes it from any other. Its preparation is very simple: the the tender calçot, without cleaning, is put on a grill with a strong fire. When they´re roasted, they´re eaten nice and hot accompanied by some nice glasses of wine. The calçots are served with special sauces that can include hazelnuts, almonds, garlic, tomatoes and olive oil, but it depends on the place and the taste that these ingredients might have something added to them. This mix make it a special dish to strengthen the body after the hard winter. If you´re coming for a few days on holiday to Barcelona and you want to try the calçots, here are some places where to sample them and how you should do it. Eating in a calçotada is an exciting and liberating ritual because the calçot is eaten with the hands and introduced completely in your mouth while your head is looking up. In the restaurants they give you a napkin to wrap around your neck and gloves for the hands, but if you´re with informal company, you can leave the gloves and wash your hands at the end of the meal. If you want to know a few details on where to eat a nice calçotada, we...

Antoni Muntadas at MACBA in Barcelona

If you are still interested in art projects that use an interview format, you can’t miss the exhibition “Between the Frames: the Forum” by Antoni Muntadas, which can be visited at MACBA until the 20th of May, in the framework of the broader exhibition “Volum!”, which has a joint collection of works from La Caixa Foundation and the MACBA Museum. The overall project, which is more extensive, consist of more than 150 hours of interviews with art agents, recorded by the same Antoni Muntadas in the decade 1983-1993. These years were very interesting for the artist because they were crucial in accommodating parts of the “art system”, when the role of curators and collectors began to take increasing importance in the creation of works and – above all – in the selection of what is exposed and what was hidden, as well as, the decisions of institutions and critics who began to dramatically influence on those who were in and out. Trying to understand the motion of this system from inside out, Muntadas approached this with a critical eye and with the intention of bringing together the contributions into a file (key word in the artistic creation of those years). Thus, he interviewed dealers, collectors, gallerists, personalities of museums and institutions, guides, critics, media and, of course, artists. 8 different agents, which in the sample are represented by 8 rooms lit with different colors, in which there are some screens that broadcast a selection of interviews. The other interviews, which don’t appear in the sample of MACBA, are freely available in the Documentation Centre and Museum Studies, located next...

The Sadies in Barcelona

It seems indisputable that, since the beginning of the trend known as freak-folk, inaugurated with outstanding talents as Devendra Banhart (primarily responsible for the revaluation of the first album of Vashti Bunyan), CocoRosie and Joanna Newsom, one of the most sensitive and revolutionary projects of independent music of this century, that was born as the return to the presence of traditional, roots, folk. It´s like if somehow the tear characteristic of alternative music had been replaced by a deep melancholy lyrical that finds its best expression in traditional forms of music. Reviewing the lists of the best music journals, the presence of the great works by artists like PJ Harvey, Bill Callahan, Gilliam Welsh, Fleet Foxes, Josh T Pearson, Bon Ivers, Wilco, Jonathan Wilson, The Jayhawks, and The Black Keys, to name just a few names, all of them in one way or another are directly related to traditional music, be it country, blues, folk and bluegrass. More than one critic has associated this return to roots, with its varied, exciting and innovative twists- a need for truth and authenticity increasingly urgent in a world characterized by the increasing commodification of experience resulting from the use of dominant social networks and mass media. Truth and authenticity that would also have to do with the will and the urge to talk about things that have always care of (love, melancholy, longing, death, time …), this limited set of issues and metaphors are so limited that perhaps could loosely be counted with the fingers, which form infinite variations according to Borges the universe of human creation. The highly recommended band The...

Elliot Murphy in Barcelona

The acclaimed first album by Elliot Murphy, who will give one of his endearing and intense concerts in the Sala Bikini in Barcelona on March 10 (http://www.bikinibcn.com/en/concerts/_mes:03, day: 10, year: 2012 /) bore the name Aquashow in homage to his heritage  and the  business of the same name his father had in the fifties on the site of the World Fair held in New York , the hometown of singer, actor, journalist, poet and novelist, in 1939. Murphy´s childhood memories are compounded by the diver clowns, jugglers, comedians and swimmers a la Esther Williams, that he saw almost every day in this wonderful outdoor Art Deco theater that vibrated with the music of the great Duke Ellington. Another decisive factor was the Sky Club, his father´s following business, located not far from where Lindbergh took off on his legendary voyage, (the transatlantic aviation feat) where he specially remembers the legendary musical evenings and dance halls where he learned to love bands like The Seeds, The Ronettes and Jay and the American. Although his first band, The Rapscallion, wonThe Battle of the Bands hosted by the State of New York in 1966 when he was not yet 18, Murphy began writing songs four years later on the streets of Europe, where he led a bohemian life and met Federico Fellini, who gave him a small role in his disturbing and magnificent film Rome. By then Dylan´s influence and post-Cale Velvet were already noticeable so he  returns to America with Aquashow becoming one of the most successful artists of the first half of the seventies. As the growing success decreased, his...

Tierra Santa in Barcelona

The Heavy Metal, seen and listened very closely, is full of so many excesses and wild paraphernalia as glam, satánica or a guerrera. Making a list of how this band started as a way of Metal sources, of most controversial issues related to the devil, satanism and human sacrifice, they probably start in “Sympathy for the Devil” by the Rolling Stones despite not being a Heavy Metal song itself. But of course, there are many other rhythms included as the long list of blues songs that make allusions to the devil, religion, and the struggle for survival of the soul are present. Black Sabbath started with the paraphernalia of the occult on a larger scale in metal. The Germans of the Necronomicon band, continued this, influenced by Lovecraft. Thus, Metal gradually became a style where the stories of epic journeys into darkness, wars with heavenly or hellish creatures, conquests unexplored cosmic travel and other worlds would be represented. Iron Maiden and Judas Priest would use these paraphernalia narratives. Later, New Yorkers Manowar brought heavy riffs that would lead to the highest points of Valhalla. Progressive metal bands explored further in these areas or lyric possibilities. In the case of Norwegian Black Metal, Norse myths mixed with rock in a spirit returning to ancient pagan traditions of this people and the rejection the Christian order. Tierra Santa is a band from La Rioja, which started its path through the metal in the 90´s. They returned to the stage since 2010, with them all the above mentioned at the epic, legendary or mythical style, you name it. If you´re a fan...
