Mmmmmmmm, now what was my damn password?

The world wide web pampers us with numerous posibilities for jazzing up our lives. The so called social networks, like Facebook, Twitter, Bebo, Myspace and god knows how many others, are flooding cyberspace more and more. Whether to “just check my emails” or to “update my facebook profile”, so that all the world knows what I’m doing 24/7 or to download the newest CD from your favorite Newcommer Band, one of the most important inventions of humanity doesn’t only bring us entertainment and fun, but also provokes a lot of bad headaches. Why? Well, you certainly have asked yourself millions of times “Mmmmmm, what was my damn password?” Nowadays, our daily life is getting more and more stressful. Whether at the town hall, in the supermarket or wherever, you are almost always asked to give them your telephone number, passport number or your bank account. It can be especially difficult for those who even have dificulties in remembering their own birth date. But that doesn´t mean that because of the lack of intellecutal capacity we can neglect our creativity while searching for a good password for use on the internet. Each day we hear about new viruses buzzing around the web, and we get informed about new hackers wanting to play an expensive trick on us. That´s exactly why we should make a greater effort in creating a secure password for our different web accounts. Human nature is, to be quiet honest, very simple. Hence it isn’t surprising that ‘123456’ or ‘abc123’ belong to the most popular worldwide internet passwords. Why are you turning so red now? Well, you...

Those Old Vinyl Records

Would you like change the look of your home? Do you think your living room seems a bit impersonal? The furniture is nice, but it’s the same as in many other homes (Ikea?)… You want to give it a bit of originality and, above all, a personal touch. If the modern design objects are too expensive, you can browse through the flea market or antique shops, which feature furniture and everyday objects from the 70s and 80s. If you´re a fan of music, you will probably have a modern mp3, but…. don’t you agree that one of those old record players always stands out. Perhaps you disagree, but don’t you think that the image of a vinyl record spinning around the deck doesn’t look great? Playing a vinyl record is almost a ritual: you take it out from its sleeve, you clean the dust off, you check that it is not scratched, you put it on the deck and… the music begins to sound! Are wondering why you should buy a record-player if you don’t have any vinyl records? Surely you have some stored away and if you are very young you can look on your grandparents’ shelves or cupboards. Fortunately, there are still many vinyl record collectors and therefore there is a wide and varied vinyl’s market. You will find the 33 RPM (the LP) and those of 45 R.PM. with only one or two songs on each side. Anyway vinyl records are still used by professional dj – the famous 12 inch singles. You’ll also find other objects from the past such as telephones, tape recorders, lighting...

Valentine’s Day around the World

Who says that love is celebrated only one day a year? It is true that having a special date can be an excuse to pamper your partner in a more original way than other days. It is a unique opportunity to make a declaration of love, a huge surprise or a special dinner. But how is Valentine´s Day celebrated in other countries? The customs of each society can be fascinating, because there are thousands of ways to express the love for someone. In New York, for example, seven couples are chosen to marry this day on the balcony of the 80th floor of the Empire State Building. Others usually create greeting cards called Valentines Day cards that are decorated with hearts and cupids, which are exchanged among friends. On 14th February, some 900 million Valentines Day cards are sent in the U.S.! The single Italian and the English women wake that morning with a special hope. When they wake up they have to look out of the window and wait for a man to pass. The legend says that the first man that passes in front of her “door of love” will marry her. Italian families take it so seriously that this day they cook as if it were Christmas, for the whole family and friends! In Denmark, this is the day of the flowers: the people usually send white flowers to their beloved ones that are often compared to “snow drops”. Men send “funny unsigned letters”, substituting their name for dots (one for each letter). If the woman guesses who her Valentine is, the man is rewarded with...

Famine, the Third Seal of the Book of the Apocalypse

The Book of The Apocalypse is the last book of the New Testament. Without a doubt, this is one of the most important and complex texts of Christianity, which has tried to decipher its metaphors and make it more accessible to its believers. In the Book of The Apocalypse, Seven Seals or prophecies are revealed: the First one, is about the false preachers, the false prophets and the false Christs who try to deceive the masses; the Second one, is about the succession of wars throughout the history of mankind and the Third one, which will be dealt with right now, is about the terrible famine that will devastate the planet. The Third Seal is illustrated by a black horse. In a prophetic and literary context, the black colour symbolizes famine, which has led to the deaths of thousands of millions of people around the world throughout history. But the black colour symbolizes not only hunger, but also all those dark forces and phenomena that cause wars, laziness, waste, destruction, drought, fires, floods and other natural disasters. Therefore, the black horse, the one of the Third Horseman of Apocalypse, is the horse of scarcity, shortage, malnutrition and famine. The history of the Second World War has been one of the most tragic when it comes to people dying from starvation. Approximately seven million people died as prisoners at the hands of the Nazis, and though most died in the horrific gas chambers, hunger was one of the reasons that caused most deaths. In 1945, when the Allied forces liberated the camps, the vast majority of the survivors suffered from...

A winter without laziness

The winter cold keeps you from taking your arm out of the duvet to turn off the alarm clock; your fridge is empty because you were too lazy to go shopping at five when it is almost night time. You need more sun to encourage you to go for a jog or a walk and the kitchen is so cold that you dare not put anything in the microwave for fear of being frozen to death in the wait…. Finally you are late for work and you are really hungry! This is just an example of what one might feel when winter comes, but laziness is also a daily habit. You just need a little push to get rid of it! Laziness is one of the seven deadly sins, original and mortal. Its Latin root means “slow, late, clumsy and heavy” and it is defined as negligence and carelessness concerning the actions of our everyday lives. When one reaches an excess, he can give up on his duties to society and citizenship. The lack of motivation paralyzes many people, making them fall into frustration and poverty. Avoid getting bored by following your passions and desires. But there are those who are workaholics, so hyperactive that they do not know what to rest is. They think that relaxing is a complete waste of time when, in fact, it allows us to charge our batteries and be more productive. Men are made to be creative. Did you know that in Itagui city (Colombia) they have been celebrating the day of laziness since 1985? According to the organizers, “the brain never rests...
