Until January 8, 2012 the Lisbon Pavilhão Atlantic presents the Cirque du Soleil with its show “Alegria”. This work is part of the annual circus tour performed thorugh out the world, bringing the magic of a show that many describe as contemporary art, the creation, perfection and use of new circus codes in each of its presentations has meant for them to be one of the most successful mass events worldwide. Alegria was a show presented by Cirque du Soleil in 1994, in Montreal, for the tenth anniversary of its founding. It´s a less circus and more drama show because it faces the issue of abuse of power and the struggle for freedom. This musical arrangements and lighting are intended to generate an attractive atmosphere , where the magic of motion and color transport the viewer to the essence of the conflict. This interesting approach, with the participation of 55 artists and musicians from 17 countries has delighted millions The Cirque du Soleil was founded in 1984 by street performers Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier, in Baie-Saint Paul, Quebec, Canada. At the very top of the Alfama, the oldest place in Lisbon, losing ourselves in the memory of time, stands, like a sentinel, the Castelo de São Jorge, continuously refurbished, reconstructed and conditioned. In its terrace, with bird´s eye view, the red roofs of the aristocracy and melancholy of Lisbon appear. Going into it past its walls is visiting the authentic Portugal of narrow streets, colourful façades, clothes hanging from the windows and echoes of fado. This is where the ancient city refuges itself and where they preserve every single one of the layers of history which have superimposed themselves one on the other. But let´s start at the beginning. The latest archeological excavations have manifested that before Lisbon received, on a par with the name ´Felicitas Julia´, the privileges of a Roman city around about 60BC, it was a place occupied by Greeks and Phoenicians who would use its natural port for commercial activities. These would be the navigators who, taking advantage of the natural hill of the Alfama, built the first rudimentary fortress made of wood. On top of this construction, the Romans lifted the first stone wall. Centuries later, different Barbarian tribes arrived to the city of the Taugus and destroyed everything that they came across. When the Muslims arrived, around 711 AD, such was the destruction that Lisbon was barely a town inhabited by a few hundred souls. That´s when they lifted the double wall which has lasted until today. The horror genre in world film is among the favourites. And, undoubtedly, fear is one of the most used narrative themes in history. From the first oral stories that have existed, including before language as we know it today, until the gloomiest digital modern adventures, the horror genre doesn´t stop surprising us, captivating us and causing great fanaticism. And it´s because fear is an essential factor in many stories. The surprise factor, the suspense, the possibility of discovering the unknown or to be invaded by the unknown in a violent way, doesn´t stop causing fascination around the world. In modern film, classics like ´Dracula´ or ´Frankenstein´ were the first stories brought to the silver screen to cause horror. With time and the implementation of new narratives and technology, the horror genre has changed and mutated accordingly. And horror advances with culture, and it´s possibly one of the best ways to analyze societies with its paranoias and fetishes, its struggles to contain the hidden and to reveal it, to frighten the public, to scare it. Today, you only have to use a television or access the Internet to prove that horror is closer to all of us, around the corner if you want to say so. And these really are times of horror that we´re living in: global economic crisis, violence, wars… and, however, the public maintains the liking for horror in all of its shapes, in action, police and animation films.
