Leonard Cohen in concert

On the 19th of September, the Canadian musician and singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen will be performing live at the Ülker Sport Arena in Istanbul, with his best songs to give the summer a good send-off.   Leonard Norman Cohen was born in Montréal in 1934 in a Jewish family, spending his childhood between Montréal and Westount. Singer, songwriter, poet and novelist, at a young age he knew that he wanted to become involved in music, creating a country band in his teenage years called Buckskin Boys. In the early 50s, Cohen entered McGill University in Montréal and the University of Columbia in New York City. During those years he released his first poems called Let Us Compare Mythologies, under the edition of McGill Poetry Series. In the early 60s, he settled in Hydra, Greece, and published Flowers for Hitler in 1964 and the novels The Favourite Game a year earlier and Beaitiful Losers in 1966. At the time of this latest publication, he went to live once again in the United States and began to participate in folk music festivals and to compose music. The first album by Leonard Cohen appeared in 1967 under the name of Songs of Leonard Cohen, with a cover of Suzanne, a song that the famous American singer Judy Collins 1977 saw the appearance of Death of a Ladies Man, with a very different style than the one Cohen had showed until then. Two years later he releaed Recent Songs, now with a more classic sound and more similar to his other records. In the 80s, he released two albums: Various Positions (1984), which contains the famous Hallelujah, which Columbia refused to release in the United States,...

The Best Beaches for Adults and Children

Dubrovnik is ideal for those looking for beach tourism and more. The turquoise sea set off by its pink marble sands is a beauty worth traveling to see. Everything there is stimulating, and its streets and buildings are the perfect setting to enjoy time with the kids. We all know that traveling with children can challenge your imagination as well as your pocketbook, so invite them to enjoy new experiences. We’ll give you some ideas about what to do in this city located on the Adriatic Sea in Dalmatia. Almost every street in Dubrovnik ends at a cliff with a staircase leading down to the sea, where small rocky spaces allow you to take a refreshing dip in the beautiful sea. These improvised beaches are popular, and bars there will entice you with a drink or something light to eat after your swim. It is advisable to go with good water shoes, because not having any sand the rocks there could hurt your feet. These places are advisable for adults and kids 12 and older, who will have a blast experiencing different types of diving. Banje If you want sand, Banje has some, although it’s coarse and somewhat rough on your feet. This beach is very popular and gets very busy because it is located within the walled city. It is very good for swimming and sunbathing, and it’s also well equipped with places to drink and eat. This beach is fun for kids of all ages. Dan?e Dan?e  is just a few minutes from the center of Dubrovnik and is the most popular beach in the city. But...

Molotov at Razzmatazz in Barcelona

For nearly 20 years now, Molotov, who will perform at Razzmatazz in Barcelonaon September 8 (http://www.salarazzmatazz.com/op/conciertos/708), has been one of the most iconic bands of the Mexican indie rock scene. They’re also a group whose commitment to the political and social reality of the country has shown on numerous occasions, making them a reference point for many of the most critical and rebellious youth. This is evident in the documentary film Gimme Tha Power by Olallo Rubio, who through interviews with different members of the band and various personalities of Mexican culture lucidly analyzed the rise of Molotov through leftist activism in the North American country and the political history ofMexico during the last decades. As may easily be inferred, this is a must-see film for many followers of Molotov, and it will be shown in Spanish theaters the very day after the group’s concert at Razzmatazz. In it, the always compelling sound of the band, which is called Molotov because of the explosive power they have through their two bassists, will do well by an audience willing to wait for a revision of their not inconsiderable cache of songs since Desde Rusia con amor, the group’s last album, whose title is a direct nod to James Bond and a veiled homage to the Beatles. It’s a compilation that was created from various performances from their Russian tour during 2010 (which incidentally started in the city that was called Molotov during Soviet times) and an extensive review of their greatest hits from the last two decades. It is also evidence that the group is capable of reinventing themselves without...

Berlin Festival: A Chance to Enjoy Modern Music in a Historical City

One of the main reasons for visiting Berlin is that it’s always bustling with energy. There is always some event or festival taking place in Berlin. It isn’t the type of place which needs an excuse to party. This passion for a party is nowhere as evident as in the numerous festivals, events, and parades occurring all year round. One such festival is the Berlin Festival. The Berlin Festival has been held since 2009 at the location of the former Tempelhof Airport. This year, The Berlin Festival will be held at Tempelhof Airport on 7th and 8th September. Besides the main location, the festival will also be held at Club Xberg. The lineup for the Berlin Festival 2012 has been confirmed. The Killers, the amazing combo from Las Vegas, will visit the Berlin Festival. After releasing 3 studio albums and making million sales, The Killers, will release their 4th album somewhere in 2012. Kate Nash has also been confirmed to visit the Berlin Festival 2012. Kate Nash is ready to release her 3rd album after the success of her first 2 albums, Made of Bricks and My Best Friend is You. It has also been confirmed that Juniors Boys will be present at the festival and We Have Band will again make an appearance. An ex-member of Aeroplane, Stephen Fasano, has been confirmed to perform magic under the name of The Magician at Club Xberg. Some other remarkable newcomers such as I Heart Sharks, Grimes, Friends, Sizarr, Etnik, and Michael Kiwanuka, are said to be present at this year´s Berlin Festival as well. Junip was initially confirmed to appear at the Berlin Festival 2012, but they had to cancel their performance at short notice. They released a statement saying that they had originally planned to perform some songs from their 2nd album, but some unforeseen circumstances have prevented them from doing so. They have also apologized to their fans that had planned to go to their shows. The organizers are again giving the festival full throttle about two weeks before the start of the festival. Except presenting the complete lineup, some other projects, have also been introduced, such as the Berlin Debate, which will take place during the Berlin Festival 2012 to discuss copyright. Everyone will surely find something to enjoy with a wide range of music being played at the Berlin Festival, from Grimes to Nicole Jaar, from Little dragon to Kate Nash, from Major Lazer to Orbital. And this is only for Friday, there are many more artists coming on Saturday. The two days of the festival are an excellent chance to see some very successful artists in a great musical environment, and to enjoy all that the beautiful and historic city of Berlin has to offer....

Renaissance music and art at Villa Farnesina

Villa Farnesina is one of the most representative and beautiful Renaissance buildings in Rome, located in the middle of the Trastevere next to the Tiber river. It´s a place with a lot of history, so much so that it goes back to the times of Julius Caesar. The place where the villa is built was always the residence of Roman noblemen or aristocracy. In this very same place, the emperor Julius Caesar had a palace surrounded by vineyards and crops, and the story says that it was in this place that the Caesar kept his lover, the mother of his son Caesarion, Cleopatra. With the arrival of the Renaissance, Roman nobility began to show its economic and social power by building huge constructions. The most important surnames competed amongst each other by ordering the construction of their palaces or summer houses, where they used to carry out their social and leisure activities, to the most famous artists and architects of the time. Villa Farnesina is one of these places. It was ordered by the banker Agostini Guidi in 1505. For that, he called upon the most famous artists of the time, among them Baltassare Peruzzi, for the construction and deign, as well as the decoration of some parts of the palace. Also, he called upon Rafael, who painted the famous frescos of the facade and decorated the whole inside of the building with paintings, now a Renaissance nobility symbol. As well as Rafael, Peruzzi himself and Sebastiano del Piombo participated in the decoration of the walls and ceilings of the palace. The frescos chosen for the decoration of the...

Discovering the typical Italian festivals

August in Italy is synonymous for festivals. I´m not talking about rock or alternative pop festivals but festivals that have been taking place for many centuries… well, maybe that was an exaggeration but what´s sure is that they reminisce about and maintain Italian culture alive. They´re the sacred and profane festivals, annual events where the whole community participates and which trespass the purely religious, making it one of the best examples of culture from each of the Italian regions. This is a real cultural mix where profane and sacred imaginaries get tangled with each other along with typical consumptions, art and gastronomy, as well as a whole particular world of beliefs and social imaginaries that give shape and life to these authentic and typical events that become the clearest examples of cultural change, formed by traditions and current elements that bring unique wealth to these regional festivals. These are parties that have been taking place for many years and that have incorporated new elements with time that have settled as part of the tradition. There are so many festivals in each region that I recommend that you visit the link that I´ve attached further down if you´re interested in partaking in these types of tourist activities that are, undoubtedly, much more interesting and enriching because they involve real knowledge of the society that you´re visiting, in this case the cultural and religious traditions of each Italian region. Even so, there are some that you cannot miss and that I will recommend you right now: in Florence, Cena Medicea, the Tortello and meat festival and the Duck and Boar Festival;...

Regata Storica in Venice

The race, which has been taking place in Venice in one way or another for thousands of years, is not the most important thing. The truly memorable thing about the Regata Storica, which will take place on this wonderful city on the Adriatic Sea on the 2nd of September, is the floating parade that precedes the competition (http://regatastoricavenezia.it/index.php?lang=en&pg=1&page=1). This explosion of colour and lavish unfolding of costumes and boats from a time that seems to enchant us and suddenly take us into a painting of Canaletto whose name we don´t remember, is the exact existing reconstruction of 16th century emblematic Venice, a Venice that aside from time and space makes us vibrate deeply and delicately with all of its wavy and striking beauty along the Grand Canal to the bays of St Marco. Classified by seniority and the type of boats, it´s not actually one race but four. The most famous, fast and thrilling of them is the one known as the Campioni su Gondolini, which ends in the spectacular floating stage, that usually rises for the occasion, of the Ca´ Foscari Palace. In the two hours that are in between of the wonderful aquatic parade and the Campioni su Gondolini, three other regattas will take place consecutively that will race on the startling marine surfaces of the Grand Canal and Rialto at unsuspected speeds. Even so, as part of the occasion of the Regata Storica, from the 29th of August until the 25th of September, you can admire a wonderful historical exhibition at the Cassa di Risparmio that documents the history of the event through a series of paintings, costumes and...

4 Remedies for Jetlag

Flying into the city that never sleeps with a terrible case of jetlag is no-one’s idea of a wonderful start to that much anticipated holiday. But, with a little bit of planning and discipline, you can help your body fight jetlag so that you can enjoy you New York adventures sooner after landing.   There are multiple elements in an international flight that work against your body. Cabin pressure has been shown to have similar affects on the body as altitude, making you dehydrate quicker. Add that to interrupted sleep, change in time zones, lower humidity that dehydrates you, less oxygen and more carbon dioxin, and you have yourself a reliable cocktail for jetlag. Here are some well-tested anti-jetlag tips to try before, during and after that long-haul flight: Stay Hydrated This number one rule to beat jetlag isn’t as simple as drinking more water. Topping up those lost minerals is also key to make sure you don’t dehydrate. Instead of just water, try also drinking electrolyte-containing sports drinks, coconut water or tomato juice before and during your flight. Making sure you actively hydrate your body up to two days before you leave, a couple of times every hour during your flights, and in the days after you land, is a great way to manage jetlag. Also, to top up your sodium levels during the flight and encourage hydration, snack on pretzels and salted nuts, and add a little salt to your meal. Rest Up Making sure you are well rested and sleeping at the right times is another great way to ready your body for a changed time-zone...
