Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum, which is in Amsterdam, is a museum that´s dedicated exclusively to the arts, the history and the crafts and it possesses a large collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age and an important collection of Asian art.

 

The museum was founded in 1800 and was inspired by the French museums that were being created at the time. At that moment it was known as the National Art Gallery and in 1808 it moved to Amsterdam by order of Louis Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. The paintings that the city possessed, like some by Rembrandt, began to form part of the collection.

 

On the other hand, the museum also possesses the Rijksmuseum Investigation Library which is the biggest historic investigation library in the Netherlands, which gives the museum an added value and makes it one of the most important ones. Some of the paintings that form part of its collection are by artists such as Jacob van Ruysdael, Frans Hais, Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen and Rembrandt among others.
