The Tower of London is, as well as a national monument of cultural and historical interest, a Royal Palace and Fortress of Her Majesty. It´s a castle that finds itself on the shores of the river Thames, right in the centre of the city of London.
This fortress was founded in 1066 and, from the 12th century, it was used as a prison although that wasn´t the idea when it was built. But it always served as a reference point for all Londoners. In the 14th century, when a new king was introduced, processions took place from the tower to Westminster Abbey. It also served as a Royal Mint, arms deposit and treasury amongst other things.
And because the uses of this castle were always tied to the artillery, it deteriorated so much that it could never be used as a royal residence.
In 1988, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site for being a medieval Norman construction. Today, the tower is an attractive for tourists and aside from the tower itself, you can see the British Crown Jewels and other royalty objects.
