Venice Natural History Museum

The Fondaco del Turchi is a 13th century palace located in the district of the Santa Croce which faces the Grand Canal and, as well as being one of Venice´s most important constructions, it also holds the Venice Natural History Museum.

The place, which originally belonged to the Pesaro family, possesses two Gothic towers and it has a very imposing Bizantine style. After having been through many owners it was finally acquired by the government in 1865 and in 1922, it became in the museum that it is today.

The museum contains sections dedicated to natural sciences and the history of the city. It also possesses impressive naturalist collections, an extensive library and a centre for scientific and educational activities that take place.

One of the most important exhibitions in the place is the one that´s dedicated to the Venetian paleontologist Giancarlo Ligabue, who led an expedition to Nigeria in 1973 where they discovered important fossil remains.

Also, there´s the reproduction of the natural environment where they show an aquarium with over five thousand litres of sea water and it provides a large diversity of species.

You can rent apartments in Venice and enjoy one of its most important museums.
