As an initiative from the Municipality of Barcelona, the famous Fiesta Catalana (Catalan Festival) takes place on the Avinguda de la Catedral (Cathedral Avenue). This festival is celebrated with a wide range of folkloric activities, designed for those who want to get to know more about the Catalan roots. This is an event for you to enjoy the most beautiful traditions of the Catalan culture.
Every Saturday the busy Avinguda de la Catedral is filled with a great variety of events for everyone to have fun. This celebration began on the 12th of May and will be over on the 15th of September. Throughout the month of August no celebrations were held, but you still have the chance to attend the last three days of celebration in September.
The event will feature the participation of Barcelona’s Castellers: from Sants, from Poble Sec, the Colla Jove de Bcn, from Sant Cugat and from Badalona; los Gigantes from la Barceloneta, from el Raval, from Casc Antic, from St. Jaume and St. Pere; los Halcones from Llorenç del Penedès, los Bastoners from Esbart Català de Dansaires and Poble Sec; los Bordegassos from Vilanova, el León y la Mulaza from Bcn, la Moixiganga from Sitges, la Colla Sardanista Mare Nostrum and los Matossers from Molins de Rei.
A colla castellera is a group of people (men, women and children of all ages) who build human towers. This tradition was born in Tarragona two hundred years ago and has spread throughout Catalonia, Penedes, Roussillon and the Balearic Islands. Castles are always built to the sound of castellera music, which is composed by timbals and gralles that are played according to the type of the castle is being raised.
This event takes place on Avinguda de la Catedral and the Plaça Nova 1, both located in the district of Ciutat Vella, in the proximity of the most important buildings of the city.
This is a show that aims to bring the world of Catalan culture to all tourists and visitors in the city. For this reason, the events will be presented in different languages, for the viewers not to miss any detail of the performances. The main objective of this tradition is to show the diversity of manifestations of the Catalan culture.
According to the program, on Saturday the 1st of September, we will enjoy the performance of the Colla Jove de Barcelona, the Castellers de Badalona and the Gegants de Sant Jaume.
On Saturday the 8th of September, we will be delighted by the presence of the Castellers of Barcelona (a colla castellera founded in 1969), the Bordegassos de Vilanova (a colla castellera from Vilanova i la Geltrú created in 1972) and the Falcons de Barcelona (a colla castellera founded in 2003).
On the 15th of September, the last day of the celebration, we will enjoy the performances of the Falcons de Barcelona, Falcons de Llorenç del Penedès and the well-known Colla Sardanista Mare Nostrum.
