GLOBAL SHORT RENTALS

Gandules. Open Air Cinema at the CCCB in Barcelona.

It´s been 10 years since the first edition of Gandules, the free independent film circuit of the Catalan capital. Like every year, it will be the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, better known as the CCCB, that will be responsible for organizing and holding the 10th edition of this interesting summer cinematographic alternative.

From the 7th of August, Gandules will take us an interesting cinematographic voyage, proposing those films that, despite their great success among the public and the critics, have never reached the commercial film circuit, at least not yet. The latter have remained, unfortunately, as films destined for a niche market, and that´s exactly where the importance and the mission of Gandules lies: bringing ´cult´ films, if we want to call it as such, to all types of public, make it visible and show it to all those outside the limits designated for independent film. That´s why it would be a crying shame that films such as ´The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jane, ´Bullhead´ or ´Verano´, to name a few, would stay in the shadows.

During the whole month of August, with some days break in between screenings, 9 films will be presented in original version, plus a tenth one that will be chosen by the public through a vote on the CCCB webpage. Because this year is the 10th anniversary of Gandules, they´ve decided to celebrate it giving internet users the chance to decide which film will close the 2012 festival. Users can vote for the film they like the most among a list that includes some of the most significative films of the past editions.

For the time being, these are the confirmed films that will be on this year´s programme:

Tuesday 7th of August: Vénus Noire, 2010 Franco-Belgian film by the director Abdel Kechiche

Wednesday 8th of August: Rent-a-cat, By the Japanese director Naoko Ogigami (2011)

Thursday 9th of August: Diamond Flash, by the Spanish director Carlos Vermut (2011)

Tuesday 14th of August: The Day He Arrives, by the South Korean director Hong Sang-Soo (2011)

Wednesday 15th of August: Bullhead, Belgian film by Michaël R. Roskam (2011)

Thursday 16th of August: The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jane, by the director Marie Losier (2011)

Tuesday 21st of August: Verano, by José Luis Torres Leiva, Chile 2011

Wednesday 22nd of August: Cut, by the Iranian director Amir Naderi (2011)

Thursday 23rd of August: Avé, by Konstantin Bojanov (2011)

To finish off, on Friday 24th of August, they will screen the film that has received the most votes on the internet poll. Up until now, the film ´The Exterminating Angel´ by the father of surrealism Luis Buñuel, is in pole position. ´Competing´ with it are films by other great international film directors such as the transgressive John Waters and his ´Pink Flamingos´, the ´image poet´ Wong Kar-wai with ´Chungking Express´ and Kiyoshi Kurosawa with the film ´Tokyo Sonata´ among others.

Gandules ´12. Cine al Fresco deserves all of our support, as does the CCCB deserves our gratefulness for organizing such an interesting and enriching event for free.
