La Concepción Botanical Garden in Malaga

Some of the best reasons to visit Málaga are its beaches, its Summer Fairs, its lively atmosphere, its exquisite cuisine and, of course, its good weather throughout the year. However, when coming to Malaga looking for cultural and artistic activities to do, La Concepción Botanical Garden has to be first on our list. Photo: rosergoula Located right at the top of Málaga Mountains, we’ll discover the beautiful La Concepción Botanical Garden, which is one of the most beautiful tropical and subtropical gardens in Spain and in Europe. When I first visited the garden, its beauty fascinated me; I couldn’t explain the existence of a botanical garden of this magnitude located in a coastal city. The Marquis of Casa Loring created the garden in 1855. In 1943 it was declared a Historic-Artistic Garden and currently it is regarded as a place of Cultural interest (BIC as for its abbreviation in Spanish).  The city of Malaga purchased it in 1990, remodeled it and opened it to the public in 1994. A year after its opening, the Association of Friends of the Botanical Garden was founded with the aim of protecting the natural species in it contained. The beautiful La Concepción Garden has a large collection of flora from Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. This Malaga’s gem fascinates me, making me feel like in a tropical forest thousand kilometers away. Olive, almond and citrus trees represent a large collection called “Around the World in 80 Trees”, which talks about the cultural, artistic and historic character of the garden. Considered as a Heritage site, the garden was once a meeting place for...

Take a bath in ‘Tomatina’ juice in 2013

The town of Buñol in the province of Valencia has reinvented itself thanks to the Tomatina. It´s the most popular festival not only on a regional scale but also on a Spanish and worldwide scale, being declared a festival of National Tourist Interest. It¡s a war of tomatoes where there´s also no lack of food nor drink. You will bathe in tomato juice in a battle in which the only weapon is this vegetable. It´s a great plan to blow off some steam and get rid of the stress you accumulate all year long. Photo: flydime The festival takes place on the last Wednesday in August (this year it´s the 28th. Its origins and deeply-rooted tradition means that it´s impossible not to relate the town of Buñol with the smell of tomato. La Tomatina is the most popular festival in this town of 10,000 people that, nearing the date of the festival, triplicates its number of inhabitants. It all began with a parade of giants and big-headed figures during a festival that was a tribute to the town´s patron saint in the summer of 1944. That was when there was an uprising of those who were not allowed to participate and they began to chuck vegetables at the parade. It was a truly spectacular event. The battle was repeated the following year and, after it being banned many times, it was instated as an official festival of Buñol in 1959. It was a public outcry. For it, they need around 100,000 kg of tomatoes, although they are mostly from low-quality crops, since the times aren´t all that in order...

How to tastefully decorate your apartment

Earlier we had mentioned that cleaning is one of the most important factors that contributes in making a guest feel at home in your apartment. The same applies for the general appearance of your apartment.  A tasteful decor can help make your guest more comfortable and therefore make them feel at home. Here is some advice to help you make your apartment more welcoming: 1. Keep things simple: Avoid overloading your apartment with too many items. Seeing too many things in one space can be visually overwhelming to the client. Compare these two apartments:      The image above shows an overdecorated living room, with objects everywhere and even hanging from the ceiling. The minimalistic decor of the apartment below helps to make it look cleaner and more spacious. Though tastes may vary from one person to another, minimalism is generally what prevails and gives a greater impression of cleanliness. Moreover, it is important to consider the quality and lighting of your pictures. The photo above is blurred and dark which decreases its rental prospects. For more tips on taking pictures, click on the following link. 2. Choose the right colours for the walls:  Avoid painting a room with intensely bright colours. If you do choose to paint a room in a bright colour, only paint one wall in that colour and keep the other walls in a softer tone of that colour or other neutral colours. The rooms where you want to paint a wall of intense colour should be quite large and be illuminated with natural light. Choose yellows, for rooms where you want more light. Greens...
