Sao Roque Museum in Lisbon

The Sacred Art Museum of Sao Roque is located in a building that belonged to an old religious order, together with the church of Sao Roque.

The museum opened its doors for the first time in 1905, with the name of “Museu do Tesouro da Capela de São João Baptista” due to the important Italian art collection that it´s possessed since its creation. It acquired the name that it carries today during the 30s, a time when it was extended and began to hold a higher number of pieces.

In the last few decades the facilities that were part of the convent began to be recuperated, like the cloister and the corridors that communicated the building with the church, and today they´ve been added to the visiting area and permanent exhibition.

From January 2009 the museum began with a new visiting scheme and new areas, like the cafeteria in the garden, where you can savour cakes, sandwiches, salads, drinks and wine.

It´s located right in the touristic heart of the city, a few streets away from the popular Barrio Alto, an area of restaurants, shops, bars and apartments in Lisbon
