The Wedding Present in New York

The Wedding Present is a post punk band, closer to indie rock, which was founded in Leeds in 1985. Its members came from other similar bands of the city, who come together under the musical influence of groups like The Fall and Gangs of four. The leader and founder of The Wedding Present is David Gedge, who had another musical project with other members of the band, called “The Lost Pandas”. With the dissolution of this original project, Gedge and the band’s bassist decides to continue in a new project called the Wedding Present. The band´s first album was released in 1987, when he had gained quite a reputation in the British pop rock scene and is called “Georges Best”. Since then the group built a career with many changes of its members, of which the only one still remains is David Gedge and also, and most importantly, their music has been inspiration for many bands in the indie style, for what is now recognized as a cult band that every indie lover should know. The tour that brings them to New York on the 21st of March, has a lot in common with several bands of the time that recall their early years. I am not sure if it´s because of the passing of time, a generational issue or just nostalgia, but the truth is that the tour of the Weddings is commemorative and will focus on the early albums, especially in the “George Best” which had all the impudence and noise of the best UK indie rock.
